​TELL CMS: CME IMPROVES CLINICAL PRACTICE

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Servcies (CMS) is currently accepting comments on a proposed rule that would drastically alter the way physicians are reimbursed for providing care and maintaining their practices.  Among the provisions in the proposal are incentives to reward physicians for engaging in certain "clinical practice improvement activities" (CPIA).  While doctors and CME providers are well aware that continuing medical education is one of the most effective methods of improving clinical practice, CMS' proposal fails to recognize CME as a measurement category for CPIA.

Indeed, CME should be a means by which doctors get credit under the new reimbursement system because it improves beneficiary outcomes, leads to practice improvement, can be performed by providers of all types, can be validated by CMS, and is evidence-based! That's why we encourage CME stakeholders to take two minutes to tell CMS to include CME in their calculations for clinical practice improvement, and further encourage physicians to participate in CME events.
